Dr Bond’s Common Questions #2 – Cyclogest

Someone has told me that I can make my own progesterone cream using Cyclogest pessaries from my GP. Is this true?

Dame Dr Shirley Bond

It can be tempting to try and ‘make your own’ progesterone cream, but I have discussed this with Cyclogest and they are quite clear that this is not a good idea and in all probability would not work. If you want to use a progesterone cream you should obtain a properly manufactured product.

Linda – I do not know the local situation in New Zealand but as natural progesterone is an unlicensed medicine, in any form, it is dependent on your GP being willing to prescribe it. That’s why many women do obtain their natural progesterone online, but worth speaking to your GP about a private prescription.

Are Uterogestan tablets available in New Zealand and what dosage is needed for hot flushes. Thank you.
