6 Ways to Get Better Sleep

Do you find it harder to get to sleep? Or is the problem that you are wide awake in the early hours? Menopause does disrupt sleep patterns so these handy tips can help.

Dr Andrew Weil

If you are having trouble sleeping, you aren’t alone – about one-third of the adult population worldwide experiences insomnia at least occasionally. And for most of us, the quality of our sleep will decrease at some point in our lives.

While different types of insomnia have different causes, most people can find relief through the following, regardless of the source of their sleeplessness:

1* Establish a consistent bedtime routine, and try to go to bed at the same time every night.

2* Get plenty of activity during the day. The more energy you expend during the day, the more ready the body is for rest at bedtime.

3* Reduce or eliminate your intake of caffeine, stimulants and alcohol. Even when consumed early in the day, these can affect sleep.

4* Avoid large meals late in the evening.

5* Learn and practice a relaxation technique regularly: Breathing exercises, meditation and yoga are good examples.

6* Don’t obsess about not sleeping. Occasional sleeplessness is part of life, and does not represent a hazard to health.

Helpful information:

Women at menopause generally notice a change in their sleeping patterns, and for the worse. Author Leslie Kenton has written in ‘Passage To Power’ about how to best use this time creatively if you really can’t sleep.

It it is more severe symptoms such as night sweats disturbing your sleep then you may benefit from a combined cream that has both progesterone and oestrogen.
