Can You Use Bioidentical Progesterone With The Coil/Pill/IUD/Implants?

Synthetic and natural hormones are not necessarily compatible. For some conditions they go together, but you really need to know what you can, and can’t, do and you need an expert to help.

Dame Dr Shirley Bond

Many women being given any of these products are usually told they contain progesterone – but they do not. They contain a synthetic progestin whose action mimics progesterone but it is not the same, in fact there are clear and substantial drawbacks to using synthetic hormones.

One of the main reasons women wish to use bioidentical natural progesterone alongside such products is to help with the side effects and that is certainly something that it can do.

These are some of the commonly listed side effects for the Mirena Coil for example:

*  menstrual pattern changes

*  breast tenderness

*  headaches

*  abdominal pain

*  nausea

*  skin disorders

*  mood changes

*  fluid retention

*  pelvic inflammatory disease

*  ovarian cysts

Who can use progesterone?

There are two main reasons that women are prescribed these forms of contraception: the first is for prevention of pregnancy and the second is to control heavy menstruation.

If it is essential to avoid pregnancy then it is not advisable to use progesterone alongside any product designed to prevent conception. The synthetic progestins they contain compete with the same receptor sites in the body as the natural bioidentical progesterone and this makes both of them less effective.

If you do wish to use progesterone to help with the side effects of the Pill or Coil, and it is still possible for you to become pregnant in perimenopause for example, then it is essential that you also use additional contraception methods as well.

If you have been given the Pill/IUD/Coil in order to control heavy bleeding then it will help with the side effects but you may need to have a larger initial dose of the progesterone cream to start getting your symptoms under control and to rebalance the effect of the synthetic progestins.

Helpful information:

One of there other issues that can arise with using the synthetic progestin products such as the Pill and Coil at menopause is they can also affect your weight, and that is often one of the main symptoms that women struggle with.

If trying to control heavy bleeding, which is linked to oestrogen dominance, then using bioidentical natural progesterone can help.

Hi
I have ordered 20-1 cream. I have a
Mirena coil and am on 50 estradot patches. I am 54 and prior to mirena coil had a bad reaction to utrogestan progesterone tablets causing severe mood swings. I have had the mirena coil for a month but have heavy bleeding, bloating and low mood.
I really hope that the cream will off set the side effects of the mirena coil.
Please can you advise.
Best
Kate

I need help I’m a 27 year old women haven’t had menstrual cycles for years but never thought anything of it but now since January 2018 I’ve been bleeding 6 months straight now and it’s getting heavy and heavy daily where it runs down my legs at times with large clots got diagnosed with hyperplasia with atypical and Dr prescribed me provera 10mg 2 3 times a day what can I take or do with less side effects any help out there

AnnA Rushton | 12:15 pm, April 26th, 2018

The answer is in the article Alison, it is perfectly safe whether or not you have a coil but if you were using it for contraception it is not advisable as it will make the coil less effective for this purpose. If using for heavy bleeding, as many women do, you just need to increase the dose to compensate for the synthetic progestins in your coil.

Is it safe to use siren it cream and capsules when you have the mirena coil?

AnnA Rushton | 5:44 pm, December 27th, 2017

Not if you are using it for contraception Tanya. The article makes it clear that you will compromise the Pill but you can use Serenity if your Pill is just to control heavy bleeding.

Can I use the mini pill with progesterone cream?

AnnA Rushton | 9:24 am, September 17th, 2017

Carolyn we cannot answer that here so email support@wellsprings-health.com for individual help with your symptoms and using bioidentical hormones with a coil.

What dosage of serenity would you recommend to combat weight gain/inability to lose weight and side effects from Mirena Coil? I’m not using it for contraception but treatment method stemming from adenomyosis resulting in severe menorraghia. The Mirena is the treatment for that, but now I have constant light spotting/bleeding and am at my wits end with this all this. My diet is extremely healthy and clean, no processed foods whatsoever or sugar products.

Natasha heavy bleeding is associated with low progesterone and excess oestrogen so you would be better with Serenity, not 20-1, and yes supplementing may help with joint pain but for individual help email support@wellsprings-health.com

Application is the same for all women, see the article here: https://www.bio-hormone-health.com/2016/10/24/a-simple-weekly-routine-for-applying-hormone-creams/

Hi I have heavy periods due to fibroids and have been on Mirena coil for 2 years but have taken it out as it left me feeling tired, water retention.. I also experience like joint pain/muscular pain worst coming up to my periods from head to toe . Now that i have taken the Mirena Coil out I still feel the same pain so i am considering having it again to control the bleeding as i am not keen on having an ablation or taking tablets.
Having come across these articles would the 20-1 cream help alleviate some of the symptoms one gets from the Mirena Coil? How many days would I need to rub the cream on for please and will this help with joint pain associated with being in peri- menopause as I am nearly 47yrs old ? many thanks i really appreciate any kind of help xx

Debbie if you are on the coil for contraception you cannot use our creams. If just for heavy bleeding, and you are already on oestrogen then the only cream would be Serenity, which is progesterone only, and we do not have a tablet form of the hormone.

Debbie Talbot | 1:46 am, June 26th, 2017

Hello, I’m desperate for advice, I’m on the menopause and have been for a long time even though I’m 45, I’m have 1mg of estrogen and I have the coil, can I get progesterone tablets even though I have the coil? Thank you XXXX

AnnA Rushton | 11:51 am, February 14th, 2017

Combination creams such as 20-1 work best Connie for symptoms like yours as progesterone boosts sex drive in women and the oestrogen helps with moods. However, as the article points out they cannot be used if you are still on the Pill/Coil for contraception.

Connie | 4:13 am, February 14th, 2017

So once you figure out then what natural stuff can you take to keep all this from happening. I take endo vine and cannot tell if it works. 2 pills a day still have hot flashes but not as much but sleep sucks and being fatigue also. Very moody and no sex drive so how can I correct this

AnnA Rushton | 2:06 pm, December 13th, 2016

Donna for weight loss oestrogen is not a good idea, so Serenity would be a better choice. If using Mirena only to help menopause symptoms and not contraception certainly you can combine it with our creams but you will need an increased dosage to offset the synthetic progestins in the coil. If you wish to return your unopened jar to exchange for Serenity please email office@wellsprings-health.com for help with this.

donna wheadon | 6:37 am, December 12th, 2016

Hi there i am menopausal and have had mirena coil for seven years for heavy bleeding , i do not need it for contraception. i have just been given oestrogen patches which are making me feel nauseous, heady and painful breasts. i would much prefer a more natural approach. i have ordered your 20-1 cream is this ok to use with mirena. Will the cream help also to lose some weight, I’m not overweight but hold all round the middle no mater how much exercise i do. and also water retention is a real bug bear. can you help me to make sure i have the right balance of what i need, many thanks donna

AnnA Rushton | 5:06 pm, March 8th, 2016

Karen with a coil and patches you need individual help so please email support@wellsprings-health.com who will be able to advise you on using Serenity in these circumstances.

Karen Brankin | 6:26 pm, March 7th, 2016

I’ve just ordered serenity cream and I have the Mirena coil, My GP has now prescribed evorel 50 patches as I have every menopausal symptom there is. Would I begin with a high dose?

AnnA Rushton | 11:46 am, January 12th, 2016

Ali you do not use our creams with a Mirena if you are also using it for contraception as it will lessen the effect so you must also use other methods as a backup. If using MIrena to control heavy bleeding then yes use the cream with an increased dosage.

Ali Robertson | 6:10 pm, January 11th, 2016

Hi there, just want confirmation, the way I’ve read the article I think it’s ok to use the cream but mayb up the dose with
If u have an iud (mirena)? Is this correct? I’m 50 and have hot flushes
C
Thanks Ali

Without knowing exactly which cream Lesley and its contents it is hard to answer so email support@wellsprings-health.com and they should be able to help you as generally there may be some issues with using a coil but it depends on your circumstances and symptoms.

Lesley darby | 7:21 am, October 14th, 2015
